12 Reasons to Visit Indonesia
Indonesia is one of the most beautiful and adventurous countries in the world. With over 17,000 islands, there is so much to explore. Although Bali comes to mind when people think of Indonesia, there is much more that it offers.
Indonesia has lovely waterfalls, incredible volcanoes, beautiful landscapes, gorgeous temples, fabulous beaches, friendly people, and so much more. I was never bored! Here are some reasons to visit Indonesia and why you should book a flight to see this incredible country.

1. Incredible Volcanoes
Indonesia is located in one of the most active volcanic areas of the world, in the “Pacific Rim of Fire.” Therefore, the country has over 150 volcanoes. Some of them are accessible to visitors, such as Mt. Bromo, where you can see the sunrise. There is also Mount Merapi, one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia.
2. Lovely Waterfalls
It may not be the country with the most waterfalls in the world like Iceland, but there are many waterfalls to explore. This is probably one of my favorite things I did in this country. The waterfalls are incredible, and you can reach the waterfalls by driving a scooter to them and then hiking into the jungle to find them, a complete adventure.
3. Beautiful Landscapes
When I think of nature, Indonesia comes to mind. From rice fields to volcanoes, to beaches, to the jungle, Indonesia has it all. An interesting fact is that 51% of the country is forest, making it one of the greenest countries in the world.
It’s one of the countries I’ve most enjoyed being outdoors because it has many beautiful places to explore. Just thinking about it now makes me nostalgic. I want to be standing in front of one of those incredible waterfalls.
4. Friendly People
What I love about Southeast Asia is the friendly and welcoming people. In Indonesia, it’s the same. The people greet you with a smile, and they help you anytime they can. They love showing you around and teach you about their country.
5. Amazing Beaches
Since there are 17,000 islands, you have tons of beaches to choose from to visit. Indonesia is the perfect place for laying out in the sun to get a tan, practice waters sports, go snorkeling, or enjoy the beach life.
6. Cheap and Tasty Food
It’s not as delicious as Thai and Vietnamese food, but it is still quite tasty. One popular dish I enjoyed was nasi goreng (fried rice with chicken, vegetables, or other foods).
In Bali, smoothie bowls are trendy. They are made from various fruits found in the country, and they are topped with nuts, other fruits, and more. It was my favorite thing to eat.
Also, there is a unique coffee called Kopi Luwak. It’s made from the poop of the Luwak (civet cat). I know that doesn’t sound appetizing, but after denying my chance to try it, I finally did before leaving the country, and it tasted good. The food is cheap. Therefore, you’ll find yourself eating everywhere!
7. Diverse Culture
Indonesia is one of the most culturally and religiously diverse countries I’ve visited. Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, and Christianity are all spiritual practices in this country, and it depends where you are at.
In the country, there is a famous Balinese dance, there are temples and mosques, and even religious observed holidays. It’s an interesting mix.
8. Gorgeous Temples
As mentioned above, the country is quite diverse. Part of the country practices Buddhism; therefore, you will find many Buddhist temples in Java, such as the Borobudur.
Although I never visit temples, cathedrals, and churches to participate in anything spiritual, I enjoy seeing them to admire their architecture and learn about the country’s history and culture.
In Indonesia, there is no shortage of temples. They are everywhere, and you are welcome to see them. Just make sure to respect how you dress before entering.
9. Awesome Wildlife
There is wildlife worldwide, but in Indonesia, you find two animals that are most popular here. One of them is the orangutans. They are found throughout the Borneo Rainforest, and you can find them in Indonesia.
Another animal people want to see is the Komodo Dragon, the largest living lizard. There is even a Komodo National Park where you hang out at the beach and spot Komodo Dragons. Unfortunately, these animals are deadly, so make sure you visit with a park ranger instead.
10. Snorkeling and Diving
About 20% of the world’s coral reefs are in Indonesia. Therefore, snorkeling and scuba diving is a great activity to practice in this country. You will find many shops where they rent gear, and they take you out to dive and snorkel.
With coral reefs comes diverse marine life, especially in Raja Ampat. This archipelago is an excellent getaway for those who want to explore the ocean floors. Another place is the Gili Islands in Lombok. I fell in love with the crystal clear beaches there!
11. Cheap Accommodation
Indonesia is very cheap, and you can find rooms for great prices. You can also find luxurious rentals and large homes for more reasonable prices than in other countries. In addition, there are many resort spas and places to get a Balinese massage and facials.
12. Large Expat Community
Because Indonesia is so beautiful, diverse, and cheap, many people from all over the world have chosen to call Indonesia their temporary home.
Most expats will base themselves in Bali because the rest of the country is more religiously conservative. In Bali, the largest population of expats goes to Canguu.
