6 Reasons to Visit Cambodia

If you decide to backpack through Southeast Asia one day, you have to add Cambodia to your list.  This charming country has beautiful beaches, friendly people, historic temples, a dark history, and so much more.

To be honest, this is the country that I had the most challenging time visiting.  Not because I didn’t like it, but because I perceived a lot of poverty, and I made connections to its dark history.

This is also what made it so beautiful.  It opened up my eyes to what the real world is like out there, and it humbled me as no other place has.

If you’ve never considered visiting Cambodia, please do.  Here are some reasons to visit Cambodia.

6 Reasons to Visit Cambodia

Table of Contents

1. To Explore the Ruins in Siem Reap

The reason travelers stop at Siem Reap is to explore the ruins, specifically Angkor Wat, the largest temple in the world.  These religious temples built during the Khmer Era in the 12 Century are probably the best ruins I’ve seen in the world, more than those in Mexico.

The complex area with all these temples is vast, and you need two days to explore just a few.  It’s considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it has other famous temples such as Ta Prohm, which became even more well-known after the movie Tomb Raider.

The most popular thing to do is wake up early to experience sunrise at Angkor Wat.

2. To Learn the Country's History

Before researching about my trip to Cambodia, I knew nothing about its dark history. In the late 1970s, Cambodia went through mass genocide caused by a communist party called the Khmer Rouge.

That’s only a few years ago.  It was systematic persecution that caused nearly 2 million deaths, a quarter of their population during those five years.

The Khmer Rouge wanted to instill a new way of thinking. So they targeted intellectual adults such as teachers, doctors, and lawyers.

They also went after religious and ethnic minorities who could challenge their ideas.  Children were abducted and indoctrinated (or brainwashed) to become part of the Khmer Rouge and commit atrocities against their people.

The best place to learn about this history is at the Killing Fields in Phnom Penh.  There is also a movie called the Killing Fields.

I watched it before going, and it helped me learn more about its past before arriving.  There is also the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum where you can learn all about the history.

When you go today, you will understand how much of the poverty found today connects back to the hardships faced from this era. So many children became orphans, intellectuals and religious people were killed, ideas were established, and trauma was caused.

3. To Enjoy Beautiful Beaches

Most people head to Thailand and the Philippines for beautiful beaches, but surprisingly, Cambodia has gorgeous ones too!

There are many islands to visit, such as Koh Ta Kieve, Koh Totang, Koh Thmei, Koh Rong Samloem, and Koh Rong.  All of these are perfect getaways in Southeast Asia and are hidden gems for people to enjoy.

I went to Koh Rong, and it has white sandy beaches and turquoise blue seas, but it’s also considered a party island.  It’s an excellent place for snorkeling, sunbathing, and going for a swim.

One of the coolest things I did at Koh Rong was swimming with bioluminescent.  It was like swimming in a sea of stars.

    4. To Meet Warm and Friendly People

Some of the nicest people in Southeast Asia are Cambodians.  The people here treat you very well, and they are incredibly kind.  It was easy to have conversations with them, and they wanted to become our friends.  We enjoyed talking with our tuk-tuk drivers, hotel employees, storekeepers, and pretty much everyone.

    5. To Explore the Markets

In Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, you will find markets with all types of affordable things.  You can find souvenirs, jewelry, clothing, shoes, and all kinds of food.  Bargaining is expected from the locals, so do bargain but don’t disrespect and go too low.

My favorite time to go to the markets was at night when all the food came out.  You can try all types of fruit and local flavors.  The food isn’t as great as in Thailand in Vietnam, but it’s still tasty and fun to explore.

    6. To see Diverse Landscapes and Wildlife

Just like all of Asia, Cambodia is also very diverse in its landscapes.  It is home to the Mekong River, the longest river in Southeast Asia.  There is also the Tonle Sap Lake which has floating villages, plus there are many islands and beautiful beaches.

In the country, there is an extensive range of animals.  Cambodia has tigers, elephants, bears, gibbons, birds, and more.  Always look for rescue centers and sanctuaries if you want to interact with animals.  There is poaching and illegal trade, but there are places that protect these animals.
