Below you’ll find some of the most frequent asked questions about travel, photography gear, business, personal and more.  Here are the FAQ’s.

It depends.  Everyone has a different definition of safety.  The truth is, I have felt relatively safe in almost every country I’ve visited.  However, there are some places I don’t let my guard down as quickly but still felt safe.

Some countries deal more with petty crime, and I avoid flashing my valuables.  Other countries are more conservative, and so I dress more conservatively and respect their norms. Unfortunately, in some places, women deal with more catcalling.

There are places where you can feel uncomfortable because they have different cultural behaviors to your own, but in general, people are kind and try to make you feel welcome.

So, traveling solo as a female can be safe, just make sure do some research a place before going.

If it’s your first time, go to countries that are considered safe, speak your language, and are similar to yours.  Doing so, will help you to not experience culture shock.  Then, get out of your confort zone.  I assure you, no matter where you go, you will have wonderful experiences.

Some places I recommend solo are the UK, Spain, Hungary, Thailand, Mexico, Colombia.  Perhaps some of these sound dangerous, but interestingly, there are a lot of solo travelers in these countries and it’s easy to make friends.

I plan my travels through online research. Here is a list of all my favorite travel planning resources I use.

For inspiration, I’ll start with Pinterest to find blog posts.  Then I’ll go on Instagram to save pictures of spots I want to visit.  Lastly, I’ll jump onto YouTube to get informed about a place..

My number one way to make friends while traveling is by staying in hostels. This is where I find like-minded people who also love traveling. If you don’t like sharing rooms with other strangers, hostels have private rooms and shared spaces. Perfect for making friends but still sleeping in comfort.

Another way I make friends is through tours. There are always other solo travelers you can meet and someone you can strike up a chat with.

I’ve also made friends through Instagram. Before traveling to a destination, I look for travel accounts of influencers who live there. Then, I start liking and commenting on their photos as I look up ideas of what places to visit.

Eventually, I’ve asked some of those people if they want to meet up. I’ve made some incredible friends this way. Lastly, one way to make friends is through volunteer work and study abroad programs.

I carry very little on my trips and fit it all into my 40L backpack. The things I always travel with are my packing cubes, power bank, and a converter. For photography, I have my camera, GoPro, and my phone.

Traveling can be very cheap if you want it to.  My number one tip is to stay in hostels or B& B hotels.  If you’re out exploring, where you sleep doesn’t matter as much.  My second tip is to earn points through a travel credit card.  This save you money on flights.

The third tip, is to eat cheap.  Walking away even two blocks from touristy areas can save you lots of money on eating.  Lastly, cut your spending in other areas.  You don’t need new shoes, you just want them.  Trust me, some 80 dollar shoes can buy you up to four flights in some countries.

To be honest, yes.  But that’s only before arriving to the destination.  Once you arrive and you make friends, the fear goes away.  Most of the fear is made up in our head because of pre-conceived ideas.  To the day, I have never felt in danger anywhere I’ve been.  But, there are definitely places I practice more caution.

Here are some solo safety travel tips.

Personal faq

I’m from Tucson, Arizona.  However, I was born in Sonora, Mexico. At five years old I moved to Arizona.  I was raised all over the place, living in Chino, Prescott, Prescott Valley, Phoenix, and finally stayed in Tucson for the majority of my life.

I’m a 1986 baby. I’m 35 with the soul of a 25-year-old. I’d like to think I also look 25.

When I was young, my parents couldn’t afford a lot, but I grew up camping and visiting the Grand Canyon, only a couple of hours away. Then, as an adult, I started seeing other states nearby.

At the age of 26, I visited Cancun, and my mind was blown when I learned about my Mexican culture. I had been to my native state in Mexico before, but I had never traveled this far. I was hooked. The year after, I went to Costa Rica. Then at the age of 30, I quit my job and traveled through Asia for eight months with my ex-husband.

Fast forward some time, after going through divorce I discovered solo travel and now I love it.  So, I left my teaching job to backpack through Latin America while working remotely.

I went to the University of Arizona and studied Bilingual Elementary Education with a minor in Spanish. I’ve taught kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 5th grade.

This is by far the hardest question to answer!  I fall in love with places easily and they each leave distinct and wonderful memories.  So, I don’t have just one favorite country.

However, I do have a top list of places I would go back to in a heartbeat.  This means I probably love them a little more.

I LOVE Mexico and Thailand because they are extremely fun! Plus, they have incredible food.

The Philippines is gorgeous and its people are friendly.  Vietnam was so unique from my own culture,  that I loved it.  Italy completely stole my heart with its beauty.  It’s a fairytale country.

Lastly, I’m not sure why yet, but I’ve spent the longest time traveling Colombia and now I’m temporarily based here.  I can’t pinpoint what it is yet, but I know that it has friendly people and lots of beautiful nature.

Before traveling full time, I saved up money and sold my home.  Now, I do a bit of everything.  I work as a digital nomad. Currently, I do some side hustles and I run two online businesses.

The first one is this blog.  I make money through sponsored posts and affiliate links.  My other small business is a digital products store for teachers.  I create printables that teachers can download and use in the classroom.

Some side hustles include teaching English and Spanish online, I’ve created websites, and I’ll sell anything digital I can create.

Plus, I don’t spend my money in other areas.  As much as I want new shoes and clothes, I only buy them occasionally, and with a coupon, haha!

No 🙂 Single, and not ready to mingle.  I was married for over 15 years (I got married young) and have been on a self discovery journey for over three years now.

Even though I’m thankful for my past and marriage was a beautiful season in my life, so is this new season.

I’m enjoying the creation and focus of new dreams, the liberty of working from where I want, meeting new people, and not having anyone else to worry about.

Do I get lonely?  Of course I do.  I loved being in a relationship and I miss having someone’s company. I still want that again one day, but I’m not rushing to have a relationship just because I get lonely.

I’d rather wait until the right one that understands my lifestyle comes along.

Photography faq

I have Olympus Pen E PL7 and carry two lenses, the 14-42 mm and the 45mm. It’s a mirrorless camera that functions very similar to a DSLR, and it’s super compact. Perfect for traveling.

However, the majority of my photographs are from my phone, the Galaxy S21 Ultra (and before the Galaxy S10).

I love Lightroom. I use both the mobile and desktop versions. For my reels, I use the app Inshot, which allows me to enhance the colors to match my pictures.

Mainly friends that I make while traveling. Other times, myself. Although I still shy away from setting up a tripod to take photos of myself. I rarely ask strangers to take them because they always seem to cut off my feet or add too much sky. So, most of the time I just take photos of the scenery without me in them.

Business faq

I have two online businesses and work as a digital nomad. The first one is this blog. I make money through sponsored posts and affiliate links. My other small business is a digital products store for teachers. I create printables that they can download and use in the classroom.

I also have side hustles like teaching English and Spanish online, I’ve created websites, and I’ve created digital products.

Starting a blog has been a fun experience. I haven’t always had time to work on it because I was working full time as a teacher, but it’s always been fun to share my travels. I wrote about how you can start your own blog if you are ready to go on that journey.
