Reasons To Visit Cartagena, Colombia

To Wander the Colonial Architecture of the Walled City

Cartagena’s old walled city will transport you back in time.  Horse-drawn carriages, colonial courtyards, narrow streets, and beautiful balconies make up this part of the city.  It is a great area to explore on foot and wander without a map.  It is the perfect place to get lost as it is bustling with people.

When the sun goes down, the walled city stays alive but becomes more vibrant and quite romantic.  It is one of my favorite city centers I’ve encountered.

    To Explore Trendy Getsemaní

This trendy and funky neighborhood was another one of my favorite spots.  Gethsemani is full of culture and art that fills the streets with beautiful murals.  The neighborhood was once known for drugs and prostitution but has become a popular spot among backpackers who stay in hip hostels and boutique hotels.  It sits just outside the walled city and is the birthplace of Cartagena.

If you look back at history, you learn that this is where merchants, freed slaves, and craftsmen lived during the time of Colombia’s revolt against Spanish rulers in the 19th century.  Furthermore, Cartagena was the first city in Colombia to declare independence from Spain.

Make sure to check out this area during the day to appreciate the streets and the art.  Then go back at night to experience a lively atmosphere with friendly locals and happy vibes everywhere.

    For Island Hopping

Island hopping is one of the most popular activities in Cartagena.  Some common day trips are Isla Grande, Isla Baru, Islas del Rosario.  For example, Isla Baru is popular for Playa Blanca, which is known for its white-sand beaches.  Various tours go out on full-day excursions, and they are entertaining.  My friends and I had the best time island hopping.

    To Enjoy the Street Food

I’m the biggest fan of Colombian food, but I do enjoy the street food found in Cartagena.  The streets have many food carts that serve arepas, empanadas, and more.  It’s the perfect city for snacking around and trying different flavors.  I was able to enjoy mixed drinks, fresh juices, and local candy too!

      For its Vibrant Nightlife

Cartagena is known for its nightlife and therefore attracts visitors.  You can either go to a nightclub or hang out in the city squares to watch street performers and have a drink.  The city is already lively, but at night even more.

      For its History

History lovers will enjoy learning about the fascinating history of Cartagena.  Pirates often attacked this colonial city in the past.  Therefore it has a fortifying wall around Old City.  If you visit Castillo San Felipe, you can see and learn about the history of how the city protected itself from pirates and the Spanish.

      To Experience the Culture

In comparison to other cities in Colombia, Cartagena has the most culture.  Throughout the walled city, you will find Palenque women wearing their traditional brightly-colored outfits to sell fruit.  Cartagena has a blend of African, European, and indigenous people, and it’s something to appreciate.

Because of the mix of cultures, you can hear different types of music playing.  You get salsa and other popular Colombian music, but also champeta which is an Afro-Colombian folk dance.  What I loved about Cartagena is how music is such a big part of the city.

      For the Hotels and Hostels

Along the beach, Cartagena has some beautiful hotels.  There is something for everyone, from upscale to boutique hotels.  This area is often compared to Miami and is quite beautiful with all its skyrise hotels.  In the walled city and Gethsemani, you will find trendy hostels and budget hotels.  No matter where you stay, you’re like to enjoy the bars, restaurants, and pools found at many of these accommodations.

      Where To Stay

There are four main areas I recommend for staying during your visit to Cartagena.  For the most budget-friendly option, Gethsemane is your best bet.  There are many hostels and a young crowd of backpackers.  Here you can walk around and enjoy the hip vibe and art.

Another budget-friendly area for hotels and hostels is in the city center or the walled city.  Here, you can easily walk around and wander the streets.  There are many restaurants, boutique hotels, museums, and more.  I stayed at El Barrio Hostal, which was perfect for my days in the city.

North of the walled city is San Diego.  It can easily be confused as part of the walled city and is filled with energy.  Here you find shopping areas, good restaurants, malls, and waterfront beaches.  You can find both hostels and hotels.

If you prefer to stay in the most modern part of the city, you can stay at Bocagrande.  Here you will find skyrise hotels, upscale stores, and government buildings.  It is also the part of the city known for its beaches.  In Bocagrande you will find many local and international restaurants.  Though there are many upscale hotels, you can also find some that are decently priced.  However, it isn’t as budget-friendly as the other three areas mentioned above.

      Travel Booking Resources

      Book Your Flight:

To find cheap flights, check Skyscanner and Google Flights. These search engines check airlines to find you the best deals.  The more flexibility you have, the better flight deals available.

      Book Your Accommodation:

Booking.com is my favorite booking site for hotels but it also shows great deals on hostels and apartments. Plus, when you reach Genius Level, you get special discounts, included breakfasts, and upgrades on some hotel rooms. Hostelworld is specifically for budget travelers who enjoy hostels.  This is the best place for finding great options.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance and Visa Applications:

Travel insurance will protect you against theft, injury, illness, and cancellations. Sometimes unexpected things happen during a trip and protections will keep you covered.  Two great options are: Safety Wing and World Nomads. Also, iVisa can help you get a visa if you need one.

      Book Tours:

Sometimes the best way to see a place is through tours.  I recommend checking out Get Your Guide for some fun and unique adventures wherever you go.
