Ride and Old-Fashioned Trolley
Admire The Parroquia de San Miguel de Arcangel
You didn’t go to San Miguel de Allende if you don’t see and photograph the Parroquia De San Miguel Arcángel. The architecture of this church is quite beautiful and with a gothic style.
It is the main attraction in the city and one of the tallest churches I’ve seen in Mexico. In front of it is the main square where you can hang out, eat snacks, have lunch or dinner, or walk around.
Wander the Streets and Check out the Doors
I couldn’t stop taking pictures of them. The houses and businesses are colorful, and the windows and doors are decorated with ribbons.
Stroll through Parque Benito Juarez
If you want to get away from the crowds and find a spot to relax, read a book, or walk, head to Parque Benito Juarez. I found it to be very peaceful here.
There are many benches to sit at, a basketball court for exercise, and many paths where you can walk around. Also, I noticed many foreigners came here to walk their dogs. It’s a place to find some peace and quiet.
Photograph the Old Gas pump
You never know what cool things you’ll see in the cities you explore. For example, in San Miguel de Allende, I came across this old and rustic gas pump that has been there for years. I think it looks pretty cool to see!
Check out Mirador De San Miguel de Allende
Just up the hill, you can have a panoramic view of the city. Unfortunately, while I visited, someone taped it up, I believe to avoid crowds because of the pandemic.
Also, there are a lot of trees that obstruct the view a bit. However, it’s still nice to go up and catch a bit of the view. You can ride an Uber or taxi to get there or walk up the hill for good exercise.
Relax at El Jardin
The city has a few squares where you can sit and relax, El Jardin being one of them. Here you find benches, vendors, musicians, and shoe polishing. It is near where you take the trolley and by the old gas pump.
Have a Drink at a Rooftop Bar
Enjoy the Galleries at Fabrica La Aurora
Go Boutique Shopping
San Miguel de Allende has lots and lots of boutique stores, and this is because of the number of foreigners who live here. It makes this city an excellent place for those who love to go shopping.
The prices are a little higher compared to other cities in Mexico because there are many foreigners and tourists.
Mercado de Artesanias
Mexico is huge on handicraft work or artesanías. If you’re looking to buy souvenirs, head over to the Mercado to check out what the local people sell.
Although I can’t buy much as a backpacker, I always check out these areas because I enjoy the vibe. Plus, many times, these places have delicious street food and snacks.
Read at Biblioteca Publica
If you love checking out libraries, head to this one. Although I didn’t spend time reading, I roamed around admiring the building. I also have this thing for libraries.
I love how quiet they are and the smell of books. So if you visit, you can also have a coffee, sit and read a book, or just check out the building.
Drink Coffee
Everywhere I go, I always recommend checking out local coffee shops to drink coffee. I feel it’s part of the culture in many cities around the world. San Miguel de Allende is one of them.
But, of course, if you aren’t a coffee lover, you can always drink a frappe or eat a delicious pastry. I went to Lavanda Café, but there are many more you can check out.
What to Eat
In Guanajuato, something funny is they sell chocolate called Pedos de Monja, or Nun Farts. Unfortunately, I didn’t get around to tasting them, but they’re everywhere and something to try.
Guanajuato has many dishes, but some of the most popular ones are enchiladas, stuffed chile, tamales, and empanadas. You can also snack your way around at the main square and eat junk food.
How to Get to San Miguel de Allende
The closest airport is Leon, Guanajuato (BJX), which is 96 kilometers from the city. Because it’s far, a taxi ride will be a bit costly at about 60 USD. There is also a bus and shuttle service that runs each day if you want to save money.
If you’re coming from Guanajuato, you can take a bus for about 150 MXN pesos or opt for a taxi. The bus takes about an hour and a half. I recommend buying the tickets beforehand to save money and get the times you need.
If you’re coming from Queretaro, you can ride the bus for a similar price, about 100-150 MXN pesos, and it also takes anywhere from an hour and a half to two. Just have an Uber or Taxi take you to the Central de Autobuses (bus station).
If however you are coming from Mexico City, you can take the bus from Autobuses del Norte on a nearly 4 hour bus ride for around 600 MXN.
How to Get Around San Miguel de Allende
San Miguel de Allende is small. The best way to get around is by foot. However, there are many hills, so be ready to walk. You can also get around by taxi and Uber if you prefer or if you’re going to further destinations.
Where to Stay
What to Pack
Here are some travel items to pack for your trip to Mexico.
Travel Booking Resources
Book Your Flight:
To find cheap flights, check Skyscanner and Google Flights. These search engines check airlines to find you the best deals. The more flexibility you have, the better flight deals available.
Book Your Accommodation:
Booking.com is my favorite booking site for hotels but it also shows great deals on hostels and apartments. Plus, when you reach Genius Level, you get special discounts, included breakfasts, and upgrades on some hotel rooms. Hostelworld is specifically for budget travelers who enjoy hostels. This is the best place for finding great options.
Don’t Forget Travel Insurance and Visa Applications:
Travel insurance will protect you against theft, injury, illness, and cancellations. Sometimes unexpected things happen during a trip and protections will keep you covered. Two great options are: Safety Wing and World Nomads. Also, iVisa can help you get a visa if you need one.
Book Tours:
Sometimes the best way to see a place is through tours. I recommend checking out Get Your Guide for some fun and unique adventures wherever you go.
