Top Things to do in San Miguel de Allende

Cobblestone streets, beautiful doors, colorful and colonial architecture made me love San Miguel de Allende in the state of Guanajuato.  This lovely little city reminded me a little of Italy, just like the city of Guanajuato did.  I had a fantastic time just getting lost and wandering the charming streets.

This city is quite popular amongst foreigners and local travelers. Therefore you’ll find it to be very busy most of the time and a little pricier.  Don’t let that hold you back though.  This UNESCO city was named a World Heritage Site, and its 24 block city center is stunning, charming, and worth a stop.

Here are some things to do in San Miguel de Allende that you are sure to enjoy.

Ride and Old-Fashioned Trolley

I recommend starting with a 90-minute trolley tour around the city with Tranvia Turistico.  This way you learn some history, see the main attractions and visit the Mirador.

Once done, you’ll know which places you want to walk to and explore a little bit more.  If you walk the city first and then do the trolley, there is no point because you will have already seen everything on foot.

The cost in May of 2020 was 100 MXN pesos.  The tour makes about a 20 minute stop at the Mirador (viewpoint), where they guide you into souvenir and candy stores. Then, to buy tickets, you go to the side of the main square at Portal de Guadalupe.

Admire The Parroquia de San Miguel de Arcangel

You didn’t go to San Miguel de Allende if you don’t see and photograph the Parroquia De San Miguel Arcángel.  The architecture of this church is quite beautiful and with a gothic style.

It is the main attraction in the city and one of the tallest churches I’ve seen in Mexico.  In front of it is the main square where you can hang out, eat snacks, have lunch or dinner, or walk around.

Wander the Streets and Check out the Doors

Like I mentioned above, San Miguel de Allende is absolutely beautiful!  This magical little town has the prettiest doors I’ve seen throughout Mexico.

I couldn’t stop taking pictures of them.  The houses and businesses are colorful, and the windows and doors are decorated with ribbons.

I asked about the ribbons and they told me it was to help identify which buildings were businesses since they can be confused with homes.

It’s simply a charming place to get lost wandering those lovely cobblestone streets and one of the best things to do in San Miguel de Allende.

Stroll through Parque Benito Juarez

If you want to get away from the crowds and find a spot to relax, read a book, or walk, head to Parque Benito Juarez.  I found it to be very peaceful here.

There are many benches to sit at, a basketball court for exercise, and many paths where you can walk around. Also, I noticed many foreigners came here to walk their dogs.  It’s a place to find some peace and quiet.

    Photograph the Old Gas pump

You never know what cool things you’ll see in the cities you explore. For example, in San Miguel de Allende, I came across this old and rustic gas pump that has been there for years.  I think it looks pretty cool to see!

Check out Mirador De San Miguel de Allende

Just up the hill, you can have a panoramic view of the city.  Unfortunately, while I visited, someone taped it up, I believe to avoid crowds because of the pandemic.

Also, there are a lot of trees that obstruct the view a bit.  However, it’s still nice to go up and catch a bit of the view.  You can ride an Uber or taxi to get there or walk up the hill for good exercise.

    Relax at El Jardin

The city has a few squares where you can sit and relax, El Jardin being one of them.  Here you find benches, vendors, musicians, and shoe polishing.  It is near where you take the trolley and by the old gas pump.

Have a Drink at a Rooftop Bar

I love city views, and I always seek places to view cities from above.  One rooftop bar I visited was Luna Rooftop Tapas Bar. However, the prices were not cheap. Therefore I went for one drink and a small snack.  It’s inside the beautiful hotel Rosewood San Miguel.

Just tell them you are going to their rooftop bar and head up.  You’ll be rewarded with an incredible view of San Miguel de Allende!  Worth the price of my expensive drink and fries!

Enjoy the Galleries at Fabrica La Aurora

San Miguel de Allende is full of art galleries throughout the city center.  One particular place to visit if you enjoy art galleries is Fabrica La Aurora.  This Cultural Center of Art and Design has artisan products, canvases, and sculptures of artists who live in the city.

It is also one of the most visited places.  You don’t necessarily need to buy anything to visit and enjoy the art. Instead, you can stop by for coffee and window shop.  Although I didn’t purchase anything, I really enjoyed walking around seeing all the beautiful pieces.

    Go Boutique Shopping

San Miguel de Allende has lots and lots of boutique stores, and this is because of the number of foreigners who live here.  It makes this city an excellent place for those who love to go shopping.

The prices are a little higher compared to other cities in Mexico because there are many foreigners and tourists.

    Mercado de Artesanias

Mexico is huge on handicraft work or artesanías.  If you’re looking to buy souvenirs, head over to the Mercado to check out what the local people sell.

Although I can’t buy much as a backpacker, I always check out these areas because I enjoy the vibe.  Plus, many times, these places have delicious street food and snacks.

      Read at Biblioteca Publica

If you love checking out libraries, head to this one.  Although I didn’t spend time reading, I roamed around admiring the building.  I also have this thing for libraries.

I love how quiet they are and the smell of books. So if you visit, you can also have a coffee, sit and read a book, or just check out the building.

      Drink Coffee

Everywhere I go, I always recommend checking out local coffee shops to drink coffee.  I feel it’s part of the culture in many cities around the world.  San Miguel de Allende is one of them.

But, of course, if you aren’t a coffee lover, you can always drink a frappe or eat a delicious pastry.  I went to Lavanda Café, but there are many more you can check out.

      What to Eat

In Guanajuato, something funny is they sell chocolate called Pedos de Monja, or Nun Farts. Unfortunately, I didn’t get around to tasting them, but they’re everywhere and something to try.

Guanajuato has many dishes, but some of the most popular ones are enchiladas, stuffed chile,  tamales, and empanadas.  You can also snack your way around at the main square and eat junk food.

How to Get to San Miguel de Allende

The closest airport is Leon, Guanajuato (BJX), which is 96 kilometers from the city.  Because it’s far, a taxi ride will be a bit costly at about 60 USD.  There is also a bus and shuttle service that runs each day if you want to save money.

If you’re coming from Guanajuato, you can take a bus for about 150 MXN pesos or opt for a taxi.  The bus takes about an hour and a half.  I recommend buying the tickets beforehand to save money and get the times you need.

If you’re coming from Queretaro, you can ride the bus for a similar price, about 100-150 MXN pesos, and it also takes anywhere from an hour and a half to two.  Just have an Uber or Taxi take you to the Central de Autobuses (bus station).

If however you are coming from Mexico City, you can take the bus from Autobuses del Norte on a nearly 4 hour bus ride for around 600 MXN.

How to Get Around San Miguel de Allende

San Miguel de Allende is small.  The best way to get around is by foot.  However, there are many hills, so be ready to walk.  You can also get around by taxi and Uber if you prefer or if you’re going to further destinations.

      Where to Stay

The best place to stay in San Miguel de Allende is in the city center.  Staying here means you can walk everywhere more easily.  However, if you have a car, I recommend staying in a hotel outside the city center with parking space.

The city is small. Therefore it will be easy to get to most places quickly.  I stayed at Casa del Tio Hotel Boutique and Hotel Casa Don Quijote.  Casa del Tio was in the center and had an incredible rooftop where they serve breakfast while you enjoy a fantastic view of the city.

At Don Quijote (a sister hotel), the rooms were larger, nicer, and quieter.   The breakfast was also much better, and it has an excellent restaurant area.  It is located just outside the city center but still within walking distance.  It just depends on what you’re looking for.

      What to Pack

Here are some travel items to pack for your trip to Mexico.

      Travel Booking Resources

      Book Your Flight:

To find cheap flights, check Skyscanner and Google Flights. These search engines check airlines to find you the best deals.  The more flexibility you have, the better flight deals available.

      Book Your Accommodation:

Booking.com is my favorite booking site for hotels but it also shows great deals on hostels and apartments. Plus, when you reach Genius Level, you get special discounts, included breakfasts, and upgrades on some hotel rooms. Hostelworld is specifically for budget travelers who enjoy hostels.  This is the best place for finding great options.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance and Visa Applications:

Travel insurance will protect you against theft, injury, illness, and cancellations. Sometimes unexpected things happen during a trip and protections will keep you covered.  Two great options are: Safety Wing and World Nomads. Also, iVisa can help you get a visa if you need one.

      Book Tours:

Sometimes the best way to see a place is through tours.  I recommend checking out Get Your Guide for some fun and unique adventures wherever you go.
