Mykonos Travel Guide: What to See and Do
White-washed buildings, blue doors, slim and stone-lined streets, beautiful beaches, Mykonos, Greece, has it all! When you hear the word Mykonos, you might imagine wild parties, but Mykonos is more than that.
It’s an island like no other! It’s unique, charming, and simply beautiful. Before arriving, I had seen pictures of how lovely Mykonos looked. However, it was better than I had imagined. It quickly became one of my favorite places in Europe.

Mykonos Travel Guide: What to See and Do
Mykonos is easy to explore and easy to get to. Here are some of the things you can see and do while exploring this beautiful island in Greece.
Get lost in the streets of Mykonos
The maze-like streets of Chora are incredible. It was fun to explore and get lost. Along the small passageway streets, there are restaurants and boutique shops. It’s the central tourist spot and where all the fun is at. You can find anything you need in this area of Mykonos.
Rent an ATV
Renting an ATV is possibly the best way to go out and have fun on the island. We used our rental to explore various beaches on the island.
They cost about 20 euros for the entire day. You could also rent a car to get around, but it’s way more fun by ATV. Ask around before settling on the first rental place.
Hit the Beaches
The beaches in Mykonos are stunning! I recommend visiting a few to take a dip in. The further from Chora you go, the more isolated the beaches will be. What I loved about them was how blue they all were!
Shop 'til You Drop
Let’s just say I stuck to window shopping! But if you’re into shopping, you will find many high-end stores like Louis Vuitton and many boutique stores.
So despite being an island, you’ll find what you need if you run out of clothes. But be warned, it all comes with a high price tag.
Watch the Sunsets
Each day we set out to watch the sunset from various points. Venice Beach is a great place to have a drink and watch the sunset.
My favorite spot was from below. To get there, follow a path up to this chapel. You will easily spot the path from Little Venice.
Enjoy a Cocktail at Little Venice
Little Venice is the best spot for drinks, food, and to enjoy a good sunset. I loved sitting on a bench and just taking in the views of the beach, the evening, and the cruise boats.
Party all Night
Though I didn’t do any partying on the island because it was low season, Mykonos is the European island for parties during the summer.
It’s very common to find celebrities and influencers at these parties. A lot of these places are upscale, so be prepared to spend if you go out.
Visit Windmills
Windmills once represented great importance on the island. Now they remain there for our eyes to enjoy. The main ones are near Chora and accessible to visit within minutes walking.
Take a Dip in a Pool
Many of the hotels have beautiful pools. It is the perfect thing to do during the summer months if you want to stay cool.
Photograph Churches
I’m not sure how many of the churches and chapels function, but I do know they’re cute! I loved seeing them around the island, and believe me, there are hundreds of them.
There are over 60 churches and over 400 chapels. Most chapels have blue or red rooftops, and the churches are white with red or blue-colored doors.
Find Cute Cats
Something unique about Greece, in general, was the number of cats! Mykonos has many of them too. And although I am not a cat person, Greece has me thinking they’re cute.
Eat Ice-Cream and Deserts
Who doesn’t love ice cream!? I saw a couple of spots around Chora and a few places to grab other delicious desserts. Hibiscus is one place you can stop to refresh with some ice cream.
Eat like It's Nobody's Business
I won’t lie, Mykonos can be pretty expensive. Food prices are high. Mostly I stuck to eating cheap gyros. But do check out some restaurants by the beach while you watch the sunset. Greece has delicious food! Try moussaka, gyros, greek salads, pita bread and hummus, and anything with feta cheese.
How to Get Around Mykonos
If you stay in Chora, you will be near all the action and walk to everything in 5-10 minutes. The other best way to get around is renting a car, an ATV, or a motorcycle to explore the island.
There are plenty of shops to choose from. In April, the cost was only 20 to 25 euros. You also have the option to rent a car or take a bus from other places in Mykonos.
Where to Stay
It all depends on preference, but most people prefer to stay in Chora. However, there are also options to stay at beachside hotels further from the main tourist area.
Most family-friendly stays will be away from Mykonos Town, and you can find gorgeous resort stays throughout the island.
If you prefer to save, you can rent an Airbnb with an included kitchen so you can cook.
What to Pack for Dominican Republic
Here is a list of my favorite items I packed for my trip to the Dominican Republic.
Travel Booking Resources
Book Your Flight:
To find cheap flights, check Skyscanner and Google Flights. These search engines check airlines to find you the best deals. The more flexibility you have, the better flight deals available.
Book Your Accommodation:
Booking.com is my favorite booking site for hotels but it also shows great deals on hostels and apartments. Plus, when you reach Genius Level, you get special discounts, included breakfasts, and upgrades on some hotel rooms. Hostelworld is specifically for budget travelers who enjoy hostels. This is the best place for finding great options.
Don’t Forget Travel Insurance and Visa Applications:
Travel insurance will protect you against theft, injury, illness, and cancellations. Sometimes unexpected things happen during a trip and protections will keep you covered. Two great options are: Safety Wing and World Nomads. Also, iVisa can help you get a visa if you need one.
Book Tours:
Sometimes the best way to see a place is through tours. I recommend checking out Get Your Guide for some fun and unique adventures wherever you go.

Mykonos Travel Guide
Mykonos is one of my favorite islands in Greece. Great tips in terms of things to see and do there. I loved renting the ATV on our trip – it beat the need to wait for the one of twenty taxis on the island after a night out. Ugh – makes me want to go back now… Thanks for sharing.
It’s unbelievable, but I’ve never been to Greece. Only my recent trip to Portugal convinced me that I should travel more around Europe. I always think I’d save that for later when I cannot cope with the long haul flights – but that’s nonsense. I think I put Greece a bit more up on my list….
We dream of hitting Mykonos soon & this would be really helpful for us in planning our vacation. what a wonderful guide & love the pics. Thanks for sharing
I love the white cobble streets and blue hints of color on Mykonos. How fun that you got lost in the streets looking for your Airbnb. I would definitely want to see the churches and chapels and the windmills on Mykonos. Great tip on renting an ATV for the beach.
We loved visiting Mykonos a number of years ago on a Bike & Hike Cruise adventure. Remember very well cycling the backroads up from the main harbor, and then enjoying the sunset while sipping cool ine and eating delicious grilled octopus.
I have a friend who went to Mykonos recently and completely fell in love with it. After seeing your photos, I can see why! It looks so beautiful and peaceful there. Getting a gyro, some wine, and finding a place to watch the sunset sounds absolutely divine!
Mykonos looks amazing! I haven’t been there yet, but definitely adding it to my list of places to visit. I love the white buildings and cobble streets!
What a lovely guide you have put together. I just love Mykonos and I have been more than a few times 🙂 and your post took me right back there and made me realise that I am due for another trip soon. They only thing I haven’t done but I would love to try next time is Rent and ATV
Wow! Mykonos seems like paradise on earth, Juan and Edith! I’ve been to Greece last month but didn’t get the chance to visit this spectacular island. I guess I have one more reason to return to Greece as soon as possible!
I’ve been to Mykonos and loved it !!! Especially Chora, the largest and best known area. The food is also fantastic, as indeed throughout the rest of southern Europe …
Mykonos is such a beautiful island with a lot to do. We always seem to be following our belly so it’s great when you have such delicious food like on the island!
Honeymoon? Heck ya!!!
