All About Hobbitenango in Guatemala
Just a few minutes from Antigua, up in the hills, is this fantasy-like themed park called Hobbitenango. Yes, a place that will remind you of the movie The Hobbit.
Although I’ve never seen the movie (don’t hate me), I thought the themed park was incredible and one of my favorite viewpoints near Antigua.
From cute little homes, to cool photo spots, volcano views, and fun activities, there is no getting bored. You can easily spend over two hours admiring the area. I highly recommend you make it a stop when visiting Antigua.
In this guide I’m going to tell you all the awesome things to do and see when you visit Hobbitenango.

Getting to Hobbitenango
Getting to Hobbitenango is quite easy and the best way to do so is by Uber ride. The ride there is about 8km (5mi) away and it will take about 20 minutes to there. If I remember correctly, the Uber ride cost about 50Q (6USD) and it was split between a friend and I.
There are other ways to get there too. You can rent a car, take a shuttle, or do an ATV tour that takes you there.
However, I must mention there is no service and calling an Uber to go back to Antigua will be nearly impossible. But don’t worry. Just outside the theme park, there are many men standing next to their car.
They call you and ask if you want a ride. I was extremely hesitant to get on one because they are not official taxis. However, I decided to trust and got one to get back to Antigua. The cost was similar.
What to see and Do
I had no idea what Hobbitenango was before arriving to Antigua. I didn’t do any research for this trip besides wanting to hike Acatenango Volcano, which is the reason I visited Guatemala.
My friend was the one who excitedly told me she wanted to go to Hobbitenango, so I said sure and went along with her plan.
I’m so glad I said yes because it became one of my favorite spots near the small city. It’s not necessarily a place with a lot to do, but it has enough things to keep you entertained for a couple hours.
But more than things to do, it’s the nature and the spectacular views that take your breath away.
If you’re luckier than me, perhaps you will get a clear view of the volcanoes. Even if it’s cloudy, you have beautiful backdrops of the clouds and the volcanoes trying to peek through.
Besides the incredible views, here are the things to do and see in Hobbitenango.
Hobbitenango Hand
The most popular spot in the park is the giant hand with backdrop views of the volcanoes and the greenery all around.
Thankfully, when I visited there were not a lot of people because it was rainy season and pandemic days where people weren’t traveling much.
However, I’ve heard the Hobbitenango gets crowded, so plan accordingly when you visit.
Giant Tree Swing
The other popular spot in the park is a giant tree swing that you can see next to the hobbit house in this picture below. This goes pretty high, so if you like adrenaline, this is a great swing to hop on.
Fair Games
There is small area where you can find a few games like those you would find at a fair. Such as knocking down bottles, throwing rings, ball games and other random things to play with. There is cornhole, archery, and ax throwing too!
Artisan Market
Finding local food and handicrafts is always one of my favorite things when visiting a place.
We found some interesting snacks and some cute items while walking around.
Find Photo Spots
The truth is, Hobbitenango feels like this giant playground to get Instagram worthy photos because of all the cool spots created for that.
You can take pictures by the hobbit houses, swings, the restaurant with views, the decor, and more.
Mini Golf
There is also a 6-hole mini golf course. Perfect for families and friends who want to have fun.
Spend the Night
How awesome is it that you can spend the night in one of the Hobbit homes!? I didn’t get the chance to, but imaging having volcano views in front of you!
Have a Meal or Hot Chocolate
You can find a bar, a restaurant and a café inside Hobbitenango where you can snacks, full meals, and drinks.
The day we went, it got a little cold later in the day. So, we got ourselves a warm hot chocolate. Plus, as a backpacker at the time, the prices weren’t within my budget. I ate back in Antigua instead.
Where to Stay
Now that you know you can stay inside Hobbitenango, let me share a little about the rooms. I’ll also share with you options for staying in Antigua.
Staying in the Hobbitenango casitas (little homes) is possible by booking ahead. There are three casitas, La Casita del Nido, La Casita del Sueno, La Casita Esmeralda.
All the rooms are eco-friendly and cozy. Depending on which one you choose, the size will vary. Check their website for bookings.
You can also stay in Antigua. For backpackers, I recommend Maya Papaya Hostel. It’s in a great location, it’s clean, and has an awesome atmosphere.
There is also Selina and Tropicana Hostel.
If you prefer a hotel, you can stay at Hotel La Galería or Hotel y Arte Antigua.
What to Pack for Guatemala
Here is a list of my favorite items I packed for my trip to Guatemala.
Is Hobbitenango Worth Visiting?
Definitely! I recommend visiting Hobbitenango to enjoy the incredible views of the volcanoes.
It’s also a nice way to enjoy nature and cute things. If you hate crowds, make sure to arrive early.
