WHAT TO DO IN ALBUQUERQUE

If you’re planning to visit New Mexico, there are a few great things to do in Albuquerque and near.  I always wanted an excuse to visit this state, and when a cousin living in the city invited me to the National Balloon Fiesta, I jumped at the opportunity.

Although New Mexico isn’t always the first state people think of when road-tripping through the United States, I think it’s worthy of being added to an itinerary.

On that note, make sure to stop in Albuquerque, where you can find a cute old town, visit spots from the shows Breaking Bad and Stranger Things, and experience the biggest hot air balloon festival in the world.

Stroll Trough Historic Old Town

Historic Old Town has been the heart of Albuquerque since 1706.   I loved strolling through the lovely streets.  You can find many galleries, restaurants, museums, and all kinds of shops.  The shops and homes are made of adobe, which gives you that New Mexico characteristic.

Attend the Ballon Fiesta

Albuquerque gets the most visitors at the time of year during the Annual International Balloon Fiesta.  Each year, over 500 hot air balloons are released daily into the sky during the festival that lasts nine days. In 2022, the city will be celebrating the 50th year of the festival.

They have various events at the Balloon Fiesta, such as glow nights, carving exhibitions, an opening ceremony, special characters night, and lots of stands to visit while you are there.

The Balloon Fiesta was a magical event that I highly recommend visiting one day.

    Visit the Breaking Bad Locations

New Mexico is not a popular state to visit in the U.S, but recently the show Breaking Bad put it on the map for more people. So if you were a fan of this big hit series, you could see Walter Whiteman’s and Jesse Pinkman’s house.  Plus, some tours go to specific sites from the movie.

You can find the Candy Lady at Historic Old Town

    Meow Wolf in Santa Fe

Just a short drive away from Albuquerque is the city of Santa Fe.  It’s a more upscale city with great galleries and wonderful restaurants to visit.  One cool spot you can find in Santa Fe is Meow Wolf.  This art installation is like no other I’ve seen.

It’s trippy, interactive, fun, and a wild experience.  There are three across the U.S.  What’s incredible about it is the art installations made from recycled items, and the rooms make you feel like you’re in an imaginary environment.  You have to experience this!

    Canyon Road in Santa Fe

While you’re in Santa Fe, don’t miss stopping at Canyon Road.  It’s a road with many art galleries of all kinds.  It reminded me of Sedona in Arizona with the incredible art vibe.  You can walk into the small homes that hold the loveliest art, and you can see the different installations found outside throughout the street.  You don’t necessarily have to buy art to visit this road. Just stroll the street, and you’ll have a lovely time.

      Buy Chili

I have a love for New Mexico because of its chili!  You find the best of the best here.  Anytime I drive through the state, I make sure to stop in Hatch, New Mexico, in the southern part of the state.  Hatch is the chili capital of New Mexico.

They have the best dried or roasted green chili, poblano, serrano pepper, and more.  However, you can find chili throughout the state because it’s everywhere. So whenever I’m home in Arizona and see signs announcing “Hatch Chile,” I buy it!

      Sandia Peak Tramway

Although I didn’t get the chance to visit, the Sandia Peak Tramway is one of the fun things you can do in the city to view the skyline.  The ride is 2.7 miles to the summit, where you have an incredible view.  Those who like hiking can take the 7.5 mile La Luz Trail to the top.

      Go Hiking

To all my hiking lovers, New Mexico is a great spot to go into nature and disconnect.  You can find many trails just outside the city.  I visited during Fall and got to experience seeing the lovely foliage.
